Howard Swope told this story to Lance Metz, historian of the National Canal, in the early 1980s. By then, he himself was in his early 70s. Howard Swope worked on canal boats for eight years.

Children were an essential part of the workforce on the Lehigh and Delaware canals. From the time they were about 8 years old, canal boat children served as mule drivers, steersmen and cooks. Although they worked long hours, children generally enjoyed life on the canal, because they were outdoors and usually working with their parents.
